Why resistance training

Muscle is the organ of longevity

It is not just about looking toned. Muscle is active tissue, and higher muscle mass and strength are linked to a longer, healthier life. Resistance training is the most direct way to build it and keep it.

Blood sugar

Muscle takes up blood sugar and helps your body respond to insulin.

Bone

Lifting loads your bones, which helps keep them strong.

Heart

Building and keeping muscle supports cardiovascular health.

Brain

Strength is linked to better brain health and cognitive resilience as we age.

On a GLP-1?

This matters even more. As the weight comes off, strength training helps make sure what you lose is fat, and protects the muscle you want to keep.

Inside the guide

The three things that build muscle

Do these three consistently, and the plan does the rest.

  1. 1

    Progressive overload

Muscle grows when you ask it to do a little more than last time. Add weight, or add reps at the same weight. Track your workouts and aim to beat your last numbers.

  2. 2

    Train close to failure

Take each working set to the point where you could squeeze out one or two more reps with good form, but no more. That last hard stretch is what signals growth.

  3. 3

    Fuel it

Muscle is built from protein. About 100 g a day works for most people, more if you are larger or very active. Dr. Taylor also covers creatine, and why he recommends it.

The 4-day plan

Alternate upper and lower body, four days a week

Do 3 sets of 6 to 8 reps for every main lift, with a weight that brings you close to failure by the last rep. Each week, nudge the weight up or add a rep.

Day 15 moves

Upper body

  • Dumbbell chest press3 × 6–8
  • Dumbbell bicep curls3 × 6–8
  • Dumbbell tricep extensions3 × 6–8
  • Dumbbell hammer curls3 × 6–8
  • Bonus: plank hold (arms extended)To failure

No dumbbells? No problem. Many moves swap for kettlebells, resistance bands, or body weight. Use whatever you have and keep taking each set close to failure. Get the plan with video demos
