GLP-1
Is hair shedding normal on a GLP-1?
Updated Sep 1, 2026From the Belle care team
Some people notice extra hair shedding a few months after starting a GLP-1 or after fast weight loss. In most cases this is telogen effluvium — a temporary, reversible kind of shedding the body triggers after a rapid change like quick weight loss, lower calorie intake, or a shift in nutrition. It is not the medication damaging your hair, and for most people it settles on its own as your weight stabilizes, usually within a few months.
What tends to help
- Get enough protein every day — hair is built from it, and protein often dips when appetite drops on a GLP-1.
- Cover the basics: iron, zinc, vitamin D, and biotin/B-vitamins through a balanced diet or a daily multivitamin.
- Be gentle with your hair — avoid tight styles and excessive heat while it recovers.
- Give it time. Shedding that started with weight loss usually improves as your weight levels off.
When to loop in your care team
If the shedding is severe, comes with a rash, scalp pain, or other symptoms, or isn't improving, let us know — your provider can review whether anything else is going on. We're glad to bring in your medical team whenever you'd like.
