What GHK-Cu is

GHK-Cu is a copper peptide. The GHK part is a tripeptide, three amino acids (glycine, histidine and lysine) that your body already makes. The Cu is the copper ion it binds. Researchers have found GHK in human plasma, saliva and urine, and its levels decline with age. In the skin, that decline is thought to weaken the signal that tells tissue to rebuild.

GHK-Cu is not an FDA approved drug. It is also described as a signal that concentrates activity where repair is needed: in laboratory and animal work it attracts immune and endothelial cells to the site of an injury and stimulates blood vessel and nerve outgrowth.

The gene research is the most striking part. One research group has reported that GHK is capable of up- and downregulating at least 4,000 human genes, and has proposed that this is what explains such a wide range of protective and repair effects from one small molecule. These are described mechanisms under study, not a promise of any result.

Research has explored the role of GHK-Cu in collagen, skin remodeling and wound repair. In animal models, researchers reported that it accelerated wound healing of the skin, hair follicles, gastrointestinal tract and bone, and induced wound healing in rats, mice and pigs. The hair follicle findings are the reason it draws interest for hair support, and they are animal data.

In cosmetic products, GHK-Cu has been reported to tighten loose skin and improve elasticity, skin density and firmness, and to reduce fine lines and photodamage. Those are reports from topical use. Much of the strongest evidence to date is topical or from the lab, and it is fair to say so plainly.

What is not known yet

Human data on the injectable route is early. Long term outcomes in people are not established, and individual results vary. Even on the topical side, a 2024 review noted that although GHK-Cu is widely used in anti-wrinkle products, there is a surprising absence of clinical studies using it, and that questions remain about how well it penetrates skin.

That gap is exactly why injectable GHK-Cu is prescribed under supervision rather than sold on a shelf. The remainder of the evidence base is accumulated prescribing experience. That accumulated experience is not nothing. It has shaped clinical intuition in the practitioners who use it, and it is different in kind from a controlled trial.
