Understanding your options
GLP-1 medications were designed for long-term use, and for many people, continuing on medication is the right choice. But circumstances change — and whatever your path, the decision should always be made in partnership with your provider. Common approaches include:
- Continuing medication long-term, especially for individuals with metabolic risk or strong genetic drivers of weight regulation
- Reducing to a lower maintenance dose once goals are met
- Gradually tapering off while continuing lifestyle strategies
- Temporarily pausing for medical reasons such as pregnancy planning
Why weight regain happens — and why it's not your fault
When the body loses weight, it activates protective responses to defend against further loss. This is known as metabolic adaptation, and it includes:
- Increased hunger signals
- Reduced energy expenditure
- Changes in food reward pathways
- Hormonal adaptations
Understanding this biology takes the shame out of the experience and helps you plan more effectively.
What actually supports long-term progress
The habits that protect metabolic stability after medication changes are the same foundations covered throughout this program:
- Preserving muscle mass through strength training
- Maintaining consistent meals with adequate protein and fiber
- Prioritizing 7+ hours of sleep per night
- Managing stress effectively
- Continuing to build behavioral skills like flexible thinking and self-compassion
